Relocation

Okay, next time I will spell check before I print another blog. And what is this three blogs in one day. Consider it make up....

The front door to Kerri and Jeff's townhome has a cute window above it. Works great for not only providing some natural light, but also aids in the "who in the heck is at the door lookout" - not peep hole in the door you see (or don't see). Anyway, the other morning Ruby was chomping down her breakfast when we heard a knocking coming from the door area. "Oh NO", methought. I was still in my PJ's - "Who could that be - what should I do" etc.,etc.,etc. And then I discovered I had nothing to fear. The knocker was a silly robin who had decided to build her nest on that tiny little window ledge. I think she was hoping if she pecked at the glass something might move and provide her more room. Well, I was pretty excited to have Ruby witness the activities of this very busy and diligent robin so we made several trips to the banister area overseeing the foyer so we could watch the progress of nest building. While I thought it would be fun for Ruby to see eggs laid, hatched and baby robins grow - I remembered the baby robin in Jackson Hole our first summer who got so big and fat his mother was still providing meals of hefty worms to her kid who should have long since taken flight. I also remembered dodging bird poop when I would go visiting teaching in Springville where the lady I taught didn't have the courage to chase away the nest building swallows. I also had instant recall as to how protective birds can be of their young and had reminiscent visions of being dive- bombed out of an area that was housing a nest. I told Kerri about our discovery and suggested we do "something" and quick. Being the kind hearted little soul she is and a new mother as well, she suggested we make a sign that would read: PLEASE RELOCATE... However, we were none too convinced that would have the necessary effect. Jeff came to the rescue and removed the nest in progress that night.

The next morning he removed the beginnings of a new nest in progress before heading to work. By noon I did the same - not once but twice. Finally we decided the only deterrent was to fill the space with something so the robin couldn't fit. It took three items to fill the area. She just kept squeezing in the little spaces remaining. Kerri is convinced that Momma Robin was anxious to drop her egg load. We were hoping she would merely move next door where there is a vacant townhome ready to occupy - by man and bird. But alas, she is gone. Hopefully to a cozy tree where she can raise her little brood without interference... And hopefully we will be able to remove the window clutter soon so people coming to the door will not question our decorating techniques...
